grape street pier - experimental architectural space

The EAS project is to build an experimental space for architecture and design that acts as an cultural hub in the Embarcadero, and act as an icon for San Diego.  Design of the building is an evolution of the shape formations from sight lines to other San Diego icons and their deconstruction.

The redevelopment of the Embarcadero, through the visionary plan, will create a new destination for residents and visitors alike to experience the natural beauty of our port. Part of this redevelopment is a new proposal for a museum and pier rehabilitation at the underutilized Grape Street pier. The proposal is for an integrated public display space and a 5,000 sqf museum.

Following the goals of the Embarcadero Visionary Plan, the Grape Street pier will become a destination for visitors, while providing a stunning visual representation of San Diego for guest arriving by sea. The location is one of the first passengers will see of our skyline when entering the port. Activities on the pier need to serve both the local residents and help attract and engage our tourists.

The proposal is for a new experimental architecture and design museum. The museum space will house a singular open space that is supported by an exoskeletal structure system. Utilization of the structure will create both clear internal volumes and also provide installation points for future projects.

EAS is an evolutionary structure without traditional programmatic function. The flexible structural systems allow the curators, artists and public to alter the techtonics of the building. Resulting in multiple functional uses to meet the needs of both today and the future.
