The Van Aken shopping plaza marks the eastern edge to the city of Shaker Heights in Cleveland. Upon approach to the city drivers are met by an confusing intersection of four roads and a light rail station. The surrounding area is home to the Van Aken shopping and transit center. The large areas of vehicular traffic have created divisions in the shopping center and created dangerous situations for pedestrian movement.
Proposing a new master plan including relocating Van Aken Boulevard and a new light rail stop. The master plan centers around new plazas located internally inside the plan. These plazas are connected via linear connections of circulation. Development of the plan started with historical study and morphed into a new plan for the area.
In addition to the master plan, a design guideline was developed for façade regulations. A bay study for a repeatable module that could be changed depending on individual tenants. The bay is divided in to 3 vertical sections and 3 horizontal sections. The vertical and horizontals sections can be used in different patterns to create new and different façade patterns that fit into the developments overall design.
